Zazi Street is the main street in Clermont named after historical entrepreneur, Zazi khuzwayo , a township of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The street itself is based in KwaDabeka and is a business hub ranging from traditional restaurants, street vendors, night clubs and Shisa Nyama’s – all in a walking distance active 24hours on a weekend.
Clermont under the apartheid days was a black middle- income township. It is surrounded by Westville, Kloof, New Germany and Inanda in the distant. Its main road is called Clermont road and is named after Sir Clermont, a farmer who sold his land. It was the only place in Durban where black people were able to buy property. Clermont has a large Anglican, Catholic and John Wesleyan community and on Sundays one can see the women of each denomination wearing their church uniforms with pride influenced by the German missionaries.
Visit the home of Restless Spirit, Thami Jali, a painter and ceramicist. As an alumni of the Rorke’s Drift Art & Craft Centre he helped re-establish the ceramic studio when the centre re-opened in 2004. He is a multi-faceted artist whose art is at once forbidding and optimistic, giving voice to the man on the street and celebrating the diversity of South African cultures and languages. He also host international artists who want gain more knowledge on African Art. This ambassador plays a large role in youth development in the township on Clermont using art programs.His home is an art gallery of marvel – as you walk from one interesting room into the next.
Next stop is a thrilling tour of the famous KK hostels, built in 1974 and it remains the largest hostel in the Southern Hemisphere. Beaming with culture and Heritage of its own this Hostel “village compound” is home to many people ranging from young to old. Some may see it as Independent to Township due to the apartheid influence but is the heart and life of the Township.
You have the option to enjoy scrumptious local cuisine, at one of the famous Zazi Road restaurants – for your own account.
Thereafter you proceed on a relaxing drive back to the Greenhub, where you tour ends.
